The Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on Thursday rejected Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatan Jagran Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari’s bail petitions in five cases, including the case of killing lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.

Judge Hasanul Islam of the court passed the order after hearing the petitions, said assistant public prosecutor Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury.

He said that Chinmoy was now in jail in five cases, filed with Kotwali Police Station, over his suspected involvement in the killing of lawyer Saiful, attacks on the members of law enforcement agencies, vandalism, and the use of explosives on Chattogram court premises on November 26, 2024.

A legal team led by Dhaka-based lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya appeared in court on behalf of Chinmoy.

Apurba said that his client, after receiving the certified copies of Thursday’s court order, would seek bail in the five cases in the High Court.

On July 1, the police submitted a charge sheet accusing 38 individuals, including Chinmoy, in connection with the killing of Saiful.

On October 25, 2024, Chinmoy led a large gathering of the Hindu community in Chattogram.

On October 31, 2024, a sedition case was filed against 19 people, including Chinmoy, on charges of desecrating the national flag.

On November 22, 2024, Chinmoy led another large rally in Rangpur, following which he was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, in the sedition case.

On November 26, 2024, a Chattogram court rejected his bail petition in the sedition case and sent him to jail.

The court’s decision sparked clashes between his followers and the members of the law enforcement agencies on the court premises.

At one stage of the clash, lawyer Saiful was hacked to death outside the court premises. Several cases were filed against Chinmoy and others following the murder.
