
Bangladesh recorded the highest dengue hospitalisations so far this year in less than first three weeks of July when the viral fever sent 6,099 patients to hospital and killed 19.Â
July also has the shared highest death figure so far.
In June this year, 5,951 people were hospitalised with dengue and 19 others died.
According to a Directorate General of Health Services press release on Friday, 114 more dengue hospitalisations were recorded with one more death in the past 24 hours till Friday 8:00am, taking total dengue hospitalisations to 19,395 and causing 61 deaths since January this year.
The latest victim was a 45-year-old man hailed from Chandpur Sadar who died under treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
In January 1,161 people were hospitalised, in February 374, in March 336, in April 701, in May 1,773, and in June 5,951, according to DGHS data.
Of the deaths, 10 people died in January, 3 in February, 7 in April, 3 in May and 19 in June.
The vector-born disease dengue arises as a serious public health concern in the country over past several years.
A dengue outbreak was first officially reported in the country in 2000 when 93 people died and 5,551 patients were hospitalised, according to DGHS data. Dengue killed 1,705 people and sent 3, 21,179 others to hospitals in 2023 alone, against 853 deaths and 2, 44,246 hospitalisations between 2000 and 2022, the DGHS data showed.
Last year, the country witnessed a severe dengue outbreak that resulted in 575 deaths and 1,01,214 reported cases. A total of 1,00,040 patients recovered during the period.
