The Anti-Corruption Commission on Thursday filed four separate cases against the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s security adviser, retired Major General Tarique Ahmed Siddique, his wife Shaheen Siddique and their two daughters on charges of amassing wealth worth Tk 62 crore beyond known sources of income.

The cases were filed with the commission’s integrated district office in Dhaka-1 following the approval of the commission, said ACC director general (prevention) Md Akhtar Hossain.

A case was filed against Tarique Siddique on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 28.59 crore and suspicious transactions of Tk 62 crore in his four bank accounts.

The second case was filed against Shaheen on charges of amassing illegal assets worth Tk 25.77 crore and suspicious transactions of Tk 59 crore in 11 bank accounts.

Two more cases were filed against the couple’s two daughters — Nurin Tasfia Siddique and Bushra Siddique — on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 3.37 crore and Tk 4.02 crore, respectively.

According to the ACC findings, Tarique Siddique owns a seven-story house on road no 1 at Baridhara DOHS, three flats at Gulshan (claimed to be inherited from his mother), a plot in sector 7 at Purbachal, and Tk 17 crore deposits in banks.

Shaheen owns three plots in sectors 21 and 30 at Purbachal New Town, a 10-katha and two 5-katha plots in sector 26, two 3,500-square-feet flats at Baridhara Model Town, a 3,000-square-feet flat at Baridhara DOHS, and Tk 3.66 crore, including FDR worth Tk 2.75 crore, in banks.

The couple’s daughters, however, do not hold any immovable property, but possess about Tk 8 crore liquid and movable assets. These are alleged to have been transferred from their parents’ illegal wealth.

ACC officials said that all investigations and charges by the commission are based on documented evidence.

So, they calculate assets using official property values, which are often much lower than market prices, they said.

Tarique Siddique’s total assets, including movable and immovable properties, amount to Tk 43.63 crore while his wife Shaheen’s assets total Tk 36.57 crore.

Earlier on January 27, the ACC filed four cases over the embezzlement of Tk 812 crore from four airport development projects against 19 people, including Tarique Siddique, former civil aviation and tourism secretary Mohibul Haque and former CAAB chairman Air Vice-Marshal M Mafidur Rahman.

The ACC is also conducting inquiries into allegations of forgery, and misappropriation of thousands of crores from aviation development projects over the past 15 years against Tarique, Mohibul and Mafidur.

After the fall of the authoritarian Awami League government on August 5, 2024, in a student-led mass uprising, Tarique Siddique reportedly fled the country along with deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
