The government on Wednesday termed the attack on the National Citizen Party in Gopalganj a heinous act and said that the attackers would not go unpunished.
A statement shared by the chief adviser’s press wing also alleged that the attack on Wednesday was carried out by the activists of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, and the AL.
‘The perpetrators must be swiftly identified and held fully accountable. There is no place for such violence against any citizen of Bangladesh,’ said the statement.
A violent clash erupted between the members of law enforcement agencies and the activists of the Awami League after the attack on the motorcade of the NCP near Chowrangi Mor following the party’s brief roadside rally Wednesday afternoon.
The NCP organised the rally as part of its programmes marking the July uprising that led to the ouster of the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.
The leaders of the Students Against Discrimination that spearheaded the mass uprising formed the NCP in February this year.
‘We commend the Army and the police for their prompt intervention, and we applaud the resilience and courage of the students and people who carried on with their rally despite these malicious threats,’ the statement of the CA’s press wing said.
The statement said that those responsible for this brutality would be brought to book.
‘Let it be made absolutely clear: violence has no place in our nation. Justice must and will prevail,’ it added.
The CA office said that the use of violence in Gopalganj was ‘utterly indefensible’.
The statement further mentioned that preventing young citizens from peacefully holding a rally to commemorate the first anniversary of their revolutionary movement was a shameful violation of their fundamental rights.
‘Members of the National Citizen Party, police and media were subjected to brutal attacks, with their cars vandalised and individuals violently assaulted,’ it added.
The Awami League’s activities have already been banned until the completion of the trial of its leaders and activists for their atrocities during the 2024 July-August mass uprising.
