The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday charged former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman and seven of his subordinates over the killing of six protesters during the July-August 2024 mass uprising at Chankharpool in Dhaka.

The tribunal, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, scheduled the opening statement for August 10 and the start of witness testimonies for August 11.


Alongside Habibur Rahman, the other indicted accused include former DMP joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Ramna assistant deputy commissioner Shah Alam Md Akhterul Islam, assistant commissioner Mohammad Imrul, Shahbagh police inspector (operations) Arshad Hossain, and three suspended constables — Sujan Hossain, Imaz Hossain Imon, and Nasirul Islam.

Sudip, Arshad, Imaz, and Sujan are currently in custody and were present in court.

The other four are absconding and were represented by state-appointed lawyer Kutubuddin.

Defense lawyers ABM Shiblee Sadekin, Saddam Hossain Avi, and Sifat Mahmud appeared for the detained accused.

According to the prosecution, former commissioner Habibur Rahman and his four subordinate officers ordered, encouraged, and enabled the fatal shootings.

The inspector and three constables allegedly opened fire on unarmed protesters, killing six.

The victims of the August 5 shooting were Shahriar Khan Anas, a Class X student who left behind a heartbreaking letter to his mother, Sheikh Mahadi Hasan Zunayed (popularly known as Mostakin), Mohammad Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Mohammad Ismail Haque, and Manik Mia, also known as Saharik Chowdhury.
