The Wildlife Crime Control Unit of the forest department on Friday rescued 50 wild birds from different pet shops and kitchen market areas of Mirpur-1 in Dhaka.

The rescued birds include three hill mynas, two crested mynas, two jungle mynas, two spotted doves, 14 common mynas, two Alexandrine parrots, 23 Ring-neck parrots, one common buzzard and one Asian Koel.

A six-member WCCU team led by inspector Nargis Sultana conducted the drive with the support of ‘SWAN’, an organisation dedicated to environmental and wildlife conservation.

Later, most of the rescued birds were released into safe and suitable natural habitats as per the directions of the authorities concerned. The sick or injured birds were kept safely at the office for temporary care and will also be released into the wild once they recover.
