The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Thursday ordered to publish a public notice in newspapers, summoning 24 accused including former Begum Rokeya University vice-chancellor Md Hasibur Rashid to appear before the court on July 22 in connection with the murder of student activist Abu Sayeed.

The three-member tribunal of Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury and retired district judges Md Manjurul Bachid and Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir also set July 22 for further proceedings.

The tribunal issued the summons after the police had failed to arrest the 24 accused despite a warrant issued on July 1.

So far, six of the 30 accused in the case are in custody.

They include former BRUR proctor Shariful Islam, university staff members Rafiul Hasan Rasel and Anwar Parvez Appel, Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury Akash, sub-inspector Amir Hossain, and constable Sujan Chandra Roy.

On June 30, chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam submitted a 130-page charge sheet to the tribunal.

The charges include crimes against humanity, specifically the murder of Abu Sayeed, the first victim of the July uprising, and the torture of student protesters from the Students Against Discrimination movement on the university campus on July 16, 2024.

Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun are accused of instigating the attacks through superior command responsibility.

However, their names were excluded from this particular case, as they are already being prosecuted in a separate ICT case over coordinated nationwide attacks during the July鈥揂ugust 2024 mass uprising.
