The Jahangirnagar University administration has suspended a student for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on social media.

The accused, Toufiq Islam Nabil, is a student of the department of geography and environment from the 2020–2021 academic session.

According to a notification issued by the JU public relations office on Monday, Nabil’s comments are considered offensive under Section 295(A) of the Bangladesh Penal Code for hurting religious sentiments. The act was also deemed ‘misconduct’ under Section 2(g) of the Jahangirnagar University Students’ Code of Conduct Ordinance, 2018.

Following the incident, JU vice-chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan exercised his authority under Section 4(1)(b) of the ordinance to suspend Nabil.

An investigation committee has also been formed under Section 4(1)(a) of the same ordinance, headed by Professor Shamsul Alam, acting dean of the faculty of social sciences.

The committee has been tasked with investigating the matter and submitting a report along with recommendations.

The incident came to light after Nabil reportedly posted a Facebook comment on Friday that offended a group of students. In response, they staged a procession demanding disciplinary action.
