A Sylhet court on Sunday sent nine people, including Jaintapur upazila unit president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, to jail in a case filed on charge of attacking army personnel.

Confirming the court order, the respondents’ counsel Nizam Uddin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the accused were granted interim bail in the case by the High Court.


He said that the accused, including the BNP’s Jaintapur upazila president and former union parishad chairman Abdur Rashid, appeared before the Sylhet District and Sessions Judge Court in the morning after filing a petition to regularise their bail.

‘The judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman, however, rejected the bail prayer after hearing the petition and ordered to send the accused to jail,’ Nizam Uddin added.

On March 27, a patrol team of army seized a huge consignment of smuggled goods, including several buffaloes, in the Haripur Bazar area under ​​Jaintapur upazila in the district.

A group of people allegedly pelted bricks targeting the army personnel when they were on the way to take the smuggled goods to the camp, leaving several army personnel injured.

The attackers also vandalised a vehicle of the army team.

Later on March 28, a case was filed in this regard with the Jaintapur police station against 70 identified and some 150 unidentified people, the court sources said.
