
Bangladesh Maritime University has observed the World Oceans Day 2025 with the theme ‘wonder: sustaining what sustains us’ at the BMU at Mirpur in Dhaka.
To mark the day, the university organised a seminar at the Shaheed Moazzem Hall auditorium, said a press reelase on Thursday.Â
Vice-chancellor of the university, Rear Admiral Khandakar Akhter Hossain, graced the occasion as chief guest.
Commodore Sheikh Shahid Ahmed, dean of the faculty of earth and ocean sciences of the university, delivered welcome address while the keynote was presented by director general of Bangladesh Institute of Maritime Research and Development Syed Misbah Uddin Ahmad.Â
Professor Mohammad Nazir Hossain, head of department of genetic engineering and marine biotechnology of BMU, also delivered speech in the seminar.
Ihsanul Haque, BMU marine fisheries and aquaculture department, was the 1st, and Fazla Ruhan Nuhas, department of port and shipping management, was the 2nd student presenter also presented two scientific papers in the seminar.
A quiz competition was also organised as the part of the celebration.
Later, the VC handed over the prizes among the winners of the competitions and token of mementoes to the speakers of the seminar.
There were a lots of findings regarding the oceans, healthy oceans, need of creating technologies to collect different types of sea fish and deep sea fish, oil, gas natural and mineral resources, inventing electricity, safe shipping transportation, higher maritime education and research, connectivity with stakeholders and foreign maritime organisations, universities and specialist of maritime fields, uses of modern technologies to the oceans, prevent ocean pollution, maritime tourism, formulating master plan and new business ideas and any other field related to the ocean were taken place in the seminar.
The VC emphasised on producing higher maritime expert graduates in different maritime fields, higher maritime research, quality education, use of modern technologies, building industry-academia relationship, mutual collaboration and its application with foreign countries and the overall development of maritime sector that could contribute for the national economy as well.   Â
The BMU treasurer, registrar, deans, head of the departments, teachers, officers and students of the university participated in the seminar.
