The Dhaka South City Corporation’s headquarters, Nagar Bhaban, was reopened partially on Monday, a day after the supporters of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Ishraque Hossain ended over a month-long shutdown of the DSCC headquarters and zonal offices.
The offices of the administrator and the engineering division at Nagar Bhaban, however, remained closed on Monday in line with the announcement made by Ishraque’s supporters.
An official order of the public administration ministry on Sunday said that the environment ministry’s joint secretary, Md Jahirul Islam, was posted to the DSCC as its chief executive officer on deputation to replace Md Zillur Rahman.
Jahirul has been asked to join his new office by July 2, the order said. The order also made it clear that he would stand released from the ministry in case of failure to join by that time.
The city corporation’s current CEO Md Zillur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that all offices of the DSCC would remain open in June 27-28 as the city corporation’s services had been disrupted to some extent during the protests.
Regarding the disruption in the engineering division, he said, ‘It is our development activity, which is an indirect service… if this does not run properly, other services cannot be provided smoothly.’
He, however, said that field-level works related to the engineering division had been continuing, but decision-making, which needs to be done from the office, had been disrupted. Â
He said that the works of the engineering division would be continuing in alternative way.
On Monday, employees worked in their respective departments at Nagar Bhaban but the offices of the administrator and the engineering division there remained locked, officials said.
They said that the works of all but engineering departments at the zonal offices also resumed on the day.
Several employees said that they were having a busy time catching up on work, as the offices had remained closed for over a month.
According to the city corporation officials, at least three employees were assaulted by a group of protesters on Monday when they entered Nagar Bhaban to resume their work in their respective departments.
Ishraque’s supporters locked the Nagar Bhaban on May 15, demanding that the interim government must swear the BNP leader in as the DSCC mayor following a favourable Election Commission gazette and a High Court order.
