
Dhaka University professor emeritus and one of the most prominent public intellectuals of the country Serajul Islam Choudhury on Monday said that without the social revolution, the fate of the common people in the country could not be changed.
Bangladesh must hold a social revolution for establishing rights of the common people, he said, adding that left political parties should lead the revolution.
Referring to the recent students and people uprising, Serajul Islam Choudhury said that after the fall of Sheikh Haina government on August 5 in the past year, the second death of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman happened.
He delivered a lecture titled the War of Independence in 1971 and the Role of Nationalism at Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad auditorium of Bangla Academy, which was chaired by Professor Parveen Hasan.
The family of Natun Diganta, edited by Serajul Islam Chy for the past 23 years, organised the event marking his 90th birthday.Â
Besides conducting, theorist, critic, writer, poet and translator Professor Azfar Hussain read out the biography of Serajul Islam Chy at the programme.
The lecture was followed by a discussion meeting attended by politicians and journalists.
Former president of Communist Party of Bangladesh Mujahidul Islam Selim said that that interim government should not introduce lootings and corruptions in the reforms in the country.
Left leader Subhrangshu Chakrabortty said that nationalism could not ensure rights of the common people so struggle must continue.
Abu Sayeed Khan called on the left parties of the country to continue their struggles for establishing rights of the people.
Sazzad Sharif, executive editor of Prothom Alo, said that after the students and people uprising, a scope was created for establishing democratic rule in the country.
Joint general secretary of Socialist Party of Bangladesh Razequzzaman Ratan said that his party would continue struggles for decreasing number of the poor and establishing their rights.
Musical troupe Bibartan Sangskritik Kendra performed patriotic songs at the programme.
Leaders of different political parties and organisations greeted him with floral wreaths at the programme.
