The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council has suspended Bangladesh Medical University professor Mamun Al Mahtab Shwapnil鈥檚 registration with it for the death of a patient at Labaid hospital in 2023 due to his negligence.

Hepatologist Swapnil will not be able to carry out professional activities for the next 5 years as the government inquiry body found his negligence in the death of engineer Afsar Ahmed, while under his care, on November 9, 2023.

The BMDC took the decision at a meeting on Saturday, said several officials of the BMDC.

They said that they would circular the decision through newspaper advertisements.

The BMDC disciplinary committee also suspended the registration of 12 other doctors for different unlawful activities.

The officials, however, did not disclose their names.

In January, the health ministry instructed the BMDC to cancel the registration of Shwapnil.

The ministry also directed to take punitive action against Labaid Hospital in Dhanmondi regarding the death of the engineer.

The Directorate General of Health Services inquiry committee found Professor Shawpnil鈥檚 negligence as the cause of the death of the patient.

Four and a half months later, Afsar鈥檚 brother, Khairul Bashar, filed a complaint accusing Shwapnil and Labaid Hospital of negligence and carelessness in the treatment.

In February 2024, Jahangirnagar University former student Rahib Reza died at Labaid Hospital while undergoing treatment under Shawpnil.

The DGHS probe committee also found Shwapnil鈥檚 negligence in the treatment of the patient.
