Shamshad Begum and Debashish Paul

The Ministry of Science and Technology has recently appointed Shamshad Begum Quraishi and Debashish Paul as members of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission on a current charge basis.

The ministry has appointed Shamshad Begum as planning member and Debashish Paul as physical sciences member of the BAEC, said a press release on Thursday.


Prior to her appointment as planning member, Shamshad Begum was serving as director of the Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka.

She joined the Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka as scientific officer on April 10, 1993. Later, she conducted important activities as head of the chemistry department, director of the scientific information department and planning and development department of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission.

She obtained her PhD from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan in 1999 and completed her post-doc in analytical chemistry from Japan and Korea in 2003 and 2007 respectively.

Debashish Paul, who has earned a PhD degree from Jadavpur University, India in 1999, joined the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission as scientific officer on January 23, 1993, and was elevated to the position of chief scientific officer on March 13, 2012.

Prior to this appointment, he served as director general of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment.

He has been actively involved in diverse areas such as research, regulatory functions, food and environmental radioactivity monitoring, radiation protection, radioactive waste management, academic activities and administration.

He served as head of the health physics and radioactive waste management unit and also held the position of director of the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology.
