A new study revealed that one in every three adults in Bangladesh suffered from fatty liver disease, driven by excessive carbohydrate intake and sedentary lifestyles.
Experts warned that 45 million people were affected, with 10 million at risk of severe liver complications.
The findings were discussed at an awareness seminar, ‘Eat Light, Walk Right — Keep Fatty Liver Out of Sight,’ organised by Bangladesh Medical University for Global Fatty Liver Day, said a press release.
Physicians highlighted that fatty liver now surpasses viral hepatitis as a leading cause of chronic liver disease.
Professor Md Shahinul Alam, BMU vice-chancellor and president of Hepatology Society, urged multi-ministerial collaboration for prevention, while former caretaker government’s health adviser and Bangladesh Academy of Science’s fellow Major General (retired) ASM Matiur Rahman emphasised early childhood awareness.
Md Golam Azam, liver specialist at BIRDEM Hospital, also spoke.
