Discussants at a seminar in Dhaka on Wednesday said that the services and scientific solutions of the Atomic Energy Centre in Dhaka were playing an important role in national development, which created a bridge between society and science.

Atomic Energy Centre in Dhaka held the seminar titled Bridging Science and Society: Services and Solutions from Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka for National Development at the auditorium of the centre at Shahbagh, said a press release.


Md Kamrul Huda, chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, attended as chief guest while Professor Abdus Salam, dean of the faculty of science, Dhaka University, attended as special guest at the seminar.

While presenting the keynote, Shamshad Begum Qureshi, former director of the Atomic Energy Centre Dhaka and newly appointed member for planning of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, said that the services and scientific solutions of the Atomic Energy Centre in Dhaka were playing an important role in national development, which created a bridge between society and science.

Abdus Salam said, ‘The Atomic Energy Centre is doing many responsible works in the interest of the country.’

He further mentioned that once there was the presence of metallic dust (lead) in the air of Dhaka, which was first reported by the scientists of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1996-97 and in view of this, gasoline was banned.

Md Kamrul Huda said that to ensure the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the researchers of the centre were committed to national development through research and service.

Sheikh Manzura Haque, chief scientific officer and head of the materials science department, delivered welcome address at the seminar, which was presided over by Shamshad Begum Qureshi.

The details of the research and development and services of the various departments of the centre were presented by Yasmin Nahar Jolly, Selina Yasmin, Kazi Md Amzad Hossain, and Md Saiful Alam.
