Residents of haor areas on Wednesday at a human chain in the capital Dhaka called on the interim government to save Tanguar Haor, a wetland ecosystem at Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazilas of Sunamganj, from detraction.

Led by Halim Dad Khan, people living in haor areas formed the human chain in front of the National Press Club.

Halim Dad Khan said that the Tanguar Haor located in Sunamganj was a unique tourist spot where huge numbers of tourists from home and abroad visited every year.

A large number of different types of birds fly and fishes live in the haor.

Due to unplanned steps, this ecologically important wetland is facing destruction, Halim Dad Khan said.

Around two hundred house boats travel in the haor without following any regulations and the visitors drop polythene bags, plastic bottles and others non-biodegradable objects everywhere destroying the haor environment, Halim Dad said.

He raised a six-point demand to save the haor.

The demands included controlling numbers of house boats, controlling dropping of polythene bags and plastic bottles, and ensuring an environment-friendly atmosphere in the haor.
