Fake names were used to join virtually the National Board of Revenue’s monthly revenue collection progress meeting for the Income Tax Division on Sunday.
According to screenshots obtained from sources about the meeting of NBR chairman Abdur Rahman Khan with other tax officials, the participants used fake names, including Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Tejgaon Egg Traders Association, Mayer Doya Sanitary, as well as model names of smartphones in joining the meeting virtually.
Some NBR officials said that the use of fake names could be linked to NBR officials’ recent protests demanding the repeal of the ordinance that split the NBR into two entities and their ongoing protest against the revenue board’s chairman.
The NBR officials are currently observing non-cooperation with the NBR chairman, demanding his resignation.
Some officials said that fake IDs might be created to show more participation as a section of officials did not participate in the meeting in line with their non-cooperation programme.
After a 10-day Eid-ul-Azha holiday, the offices resumed on Sunday and the NBR chairman held the meeting. The chairman along with NBR tax division members and commissioners joined the meeting in person, while the other officials joined it virtually.
According to the NBR sources, the administration issued a letter on June 4 regarding the meeting on the progress of revenue collection.
The meeting highlighted revenue collections from the income tax sector for May of the 2024-25 financial year ending on June 30.
In May, the NBR collected Tk 10,129 crore from the income tax sector, which was 1.68 per cent higher than Tk 9,962 crore collected in May of FY24.
NBR officials said that the participation in a revenue board’s meeting using fake IDs was unexpected.
