
A three-year-old boy died of dengue, and 234 new cases were reported across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours till Monday 8:00am, according to health authorities.
The victim, Safwan Abdullah, from Barguna, died to the viral fever while being transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment. He was initially admitted to Barguna General Hospital before being moved to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said Taskia Siddika, resident medical officer of Barguna General Hospital.
Safwan was the son of Sazia Afrin, an instructor at Barguna Nursing Institute, and Abdullah Al Mamun, an agricultural officer in Patuakhali’s Mirzaganj upazila. The family resides in Barguna Sadar upazila’s Lakurtala Mallikbari area.
With the latest death, the official dengue toll this year rose to 31, while total infections reached 6,222, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
Barguna alone has reported at least seven dengue-related deaths so far.
Dengue remains a major public health crisis in Bangladesh, with outbreaks intensifying in recent years. The disease was first officially recorded in 2000, claiming 93 lives and infecting 5,551 people.
The year of 2023 marked the deadliest outbreak, with 1,705 fatalities and 321,179 hospitalisations—surpassing the cumulative toll of the previous 22 years – 853 deaths and 244,246 cases.
Last year, 575 deaths and 101,214 cases were reported, with 100,040 recoveries.
Health experts warn of persistent risks as monsoon conditions favour mosquito breeding, urging preventive measures to curb further spread.
