The Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, in a statement on Sunday, expressed its deep concern and resentment over an incident in Bogura town where a man was allegedly beaten to death for refusing to marry off his underage daughter.

The organisation demanded that appropriate punishment be ensured for those involved in the incident.

The statement said that an accused named Jitu once went to the house of Shakil Ahmed, who was living at a rented house in the Phulbari area of Bogura, with a proposal to marry his Class VIII daughter, which Shakil refused.

On Saturday, Jitu, along with his group, took Shakil from his house to the Noyaghat area near the Karatoya River and beat him, it said, adding that Shakil succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

The statement observed that violence against women had become a regular phenomenon, and women faced difficulties not only in leading a normal life at home and outside but also in moving freely.

The statement called on the interim government to adopt a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy in this regard and improve the law and order situation in the country.Â
