A mild heatwave swept 38 districts on Friday, engulfing the entire northern region and parts of central Bangladesh, including Dhaka.

The heatwave might abate in a few places today following light to moderate rains, said the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Bangladesh鈥檚 highest maximum temperature of 38.5C was recorded at Dimla on Friday as the day passed almost without any rain.

The BMD said that the monsoon was less active over Bangladesh and weak over the north Bay of Bengal, indicating that any big spell of rain to completely remove the heatwave was not likely over the next three days.

Dhaka recorded its highest maximum temperature to be 36C.

People suffered immensely as they travelled in thousands from village homes in crammed public buses to resume their busy city life after enjoying Eid holidays. The capital Dhaka still looked deserted but the look is set to radically change by today.

Resumption of normal life activities implied rapidly increasing electricity demand from Sunday.

On Friday, the maximum electricity demand reached close to 15,000MW.

Power outage continued as it peaked at 1:00am with 186MW load shed with 14655MW produced against the demand of 14850MW.

The electricity demand dropped below 10,000MW in some hours on the Eid day on June 7.

Generation from liquid oil increased with the power demand rising, underscoring substantial increase in electricity generation cost.

In the 24 hours until 6:00pm, according to the BMD, Bangladesh鈥檚 highest maximum rainfall of 5mm was recorded at Teknaf.
