Local people from different villages under Munshiganj’s Banglabazar union on Thursday formed a human chain at the union demanding immediate actions to prevent riverbank erosion.

They said that several nearby villages had already been affected by a rise in the water level of the Padma River.

Untimely riverbank erosion occurred in different villages in the Banglabazar area by continuous rains over the past few days as well as strong currents and the rise in the water level before the onset of the monsoon season.

Local people affected by the erosion and those at risk of becoming victims of further erosion formed the human chain demanding immediate actions to prevent riverbank erosion.

The victims alleged that at least 10 villages, including Shambhu Haldarkandi, Sardar Kandi, Banial, Maheshpur, Rahri Para, Ashulir Char and Purba Rahri Para of the union were affected by the erosion and many others were at risk.

They demanded the authorities concerned take immediate measures to prevent erosion by installing geo bags in vulnerable areas.

Protesters also alleged that many people living in the vulnerable villages along the banks of the Padma had been losing their land every year due to the lack of permanent measures to prevent the erosion.

At the human chain, the protesters also threatened to organise tougher programmes if immediate steps were not taken to prevent the erosion.

At least 150 families lost their land due to the erosion in the affected areas in the past three years.
