
Police on Thursday recovered the dismembered body of a trader who remained missing for the past eight days from his home in the capital’s Sabujbagh area.
The victim is Zakir Hossain, 55, a scrap trader and a resident of the Sabujbagh Eidgah Road area.
Sabujbagh police sub-inspector Shamsul Alam said that the body was recovered from a bush in the the area and it was cut into at least five pieces.
The body parts were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
The trader has been missing since June 4.
Victim’s wife Rekha Akter filed an abduction case with the local police station in this regard.
Police have so far arrested four people Md Azhar, Shukkur Ali, Razib and Swapon in this regard.
Md Sumon Mia, younger brother of victim Zakir, said that his brother might be killed over a land dispute.
Sumon accused his uncles of killing Zakir and suspected that the arrested were hired for the killing mission.
Sumon said that the victim used to live in the Uttar Manikdiya area with his wife, two daughters, and a son.
Sumon said that Zakir was last seen after withdrawing Tk 3 lakh from a local bank in the Trimohoni area.
Since then, he had been missing.
Police said that the right hand of the victim was not found among the severed body parts.
Based on information provided by Azhar, Zakir’s mutilated torso was found on Thursday, buried under sand in a bushy, deserted spot.
Zakir was first struck in the head with a rod and when he fell to the ground, he was hacked to death with sharp weapons, police officer Shamsul said, adding that his body was then cut into multiple parts.
Police have yet to determine the motive for the murder.
