A mobile court on Thursday sealed an illegal polythene factory at Kapasia in Gazipur, and sentenced the factory owner, Abdul Awal, to three months in jail.

Executive magistrate Ishtiak Ahmed, also the land acquisition officer in Gazipur, delivered the verdict under the Environment Conservation Act, 1995, said a press release.


Officials said that Abdul Awal had been operating the illegal factory for a long time at Rautkona Mor area under Kapasia.

During a raid assisted by the Kapasia police at the factory, it was found that the factory was producing banned polythene using plastic pellets.

The polythene, raw materials, and production machinery were seized from the factory.

Ishtiak Ahmed said that production of banned polythene at this factory was causing severe damage to the environment and public health. ‘The factory was sealed and the owner sentenced in accordance with the law.’

Abdul Awal was sent to Gazipur district jail under police custody.

Additional deputy commissioner of Gazipur, Salma Akter, informed that such drives by the district administration to protect the environment would continue in future.
