Bangladesh interim government in a statement on Wednesday confirmed that the news published in various media and social media regarding the cancellation of the recognition of the leaders of the Mujibnagar government as ‘freedom fighters’ during the Liberation War, ‘is not true’.

The statement said the gazette of the ‘National Freedom Fighters Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025’ published yesterday (on Tuesday) clearly states that all members of the Mujibnagar government will be recognised as ‘heroic freedom fighters’.

The interim government on Tuesday promulgated the ‘National Freedom Fighters Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025’ in a gazette making changes in the definition of a freedom fighter.

Earlier on May 15, the advisory council granted final approval to a draft ordinance of the ‘National Freedom Fighters Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025’, subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.
