The High Court on Monday granted interim bail to Jhenaidah district Awami League general secretary Saidul Karim Mintu in connection with the abduction of Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, whose dismembered body was later allegedly recovered in Kolkata, India.

The bench of Justice Md Atoar Rahman and Justice Md Ali Reza passed the order after hearing Mintu’s bail petition.

His lawyers, Muhammad Ashraful Islam and Prashanta Kumar Karmoker and argued that Mintu was not named in the original first information report (FIR) and that the bail was granted following the precedent set in April, when co-accused AL leader Kazi Kamal Ahmed alias ‘Gas Babu’ was also granted bail.

Deputy attorney general Farid Uddin Khan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the state will appeal against Mintu’s bail.

The lawyer said Kamal, in a confessional statement, claimed that Mintu had promised him Tk 20 lakh after Anar’s body was allegedly shown in a WhatsApp message sent from Mintu’s phone.

There was an allegation that Mintu was an aspirant AL candidate for the Jhenaidha constituency.

Anwarul Azim, who had crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India on May 12, 2024 for medical treatment, was last seen at the home of his friend Gopal Biswas in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.

He left the next day, saying he was going to see a doctor, but never returned.

He later messaged Biswas saying he was headed to Delhi and would call if needed, after which he went missing.

Following his disappearance, Azim’s daughter, Mumtarin Ferdous, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on the evening of May 12, 2024.

Several individuals — including Shimul Bhuiya alias Amanullah Sayeed, Tanveer Bhuiya, and Sylista Rahman — have since been arrested, remanded, and given confessional statements in court.

Mintu was detained from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi on June 11 and later shown arrested in the same case.
