After India abruptly suspended transshipment facilities for Bangladeshi exports, fears loomed large over the future of air cargo. But instead of a breakdown, the crisis became a turning point.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines, in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority and exporters, had led a rapid expansion in direct air freight operations, turning the tide in Bangladesh鈥檚 favour, said a press release on Tuesday.

With Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka handling the lion鈥檚 share of the country鈥檚 air cargo, authorities quickly diversified. Sylhet Osmani International Airport was upgraded and certified for European-bound freighters, leading to the inaugural cargo flight to Spain in April. Weekly freighters from Sylhet are now operational, with expansion planned.

Biman is also preparing to launch cargo operations from Chattogram and, in the near future, from Cox鈥檚 Bazar, which is emerging as a strategic cargo hub. Infrastructure development and new equipment, including 381 advanced cargo handling units, are boosting capacity, especially with Dhaka airport鈥檚 third terminal nearing completion.

In the 2024-25 financial year, Biman鈥檚 cargo division recorded its highest earnings, buoyed by RA3 and ACC3 certifications that ensure access to EU and UK markets. Currently serving 48 international airlines and managing over 2,000 charter flights annually, Biman is also eyeing partnerships with global carriers to expand its network further.

From crisis to innovation, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has soared to new heights鈥攕olidifying its position as a trusted leader in the country鈥檚 growing air cargo sector.
