Election commission’s national identity registration wing chief on Tuesday said that they wanted the government to make mandatory the submission of NID data for employment in public jobs for undisrupted processing of their salaries and benefits.
NID wing’s director general ASM Humayun Kabir told reporters that the EC wanted the provision to be made mandatory for applicants to submit their NID data in line with a law related to national identity card.
‘We seek all government organisations and agencies to make it mandatory,’ he said.
He said that in recent months many government employees were exposed to troubles with introduction of the Integrated Budget and Accounting System that required accurate NID data in processing their salaries.
Previously the public employees used to get their salaries through vouchers which did not need the NID information.
Kabir said that under the iBAS system, if the employees’ service information did not match with the NID data the concerned offices could not process their salaries.
He said that the situation therefore forced the sufferers to approach the NID wing to correct their NID data and a large part of applicants, who seek correction of the NIDs, were government employees.
The official said that if the NID data was made mandatory during the recruitment or appointment, the problem would not occur while so far the information in SSC certificate was given more importance in public administration than the NID data.
Kabir’s briefing came shortly after the EC held a meeting with 27 ministries and agencies, including the public administration ministry explaining the necessity of the new provision.
EC senior secretary Akhtar Ahmed presided over the meeting.
