A 65-year-old woman was killed in an attack by a herd of wild elephants in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur, police and locals said on Friday.

The incident occurred Thursday night.


With this, three people, including two farmers, were killed in such attacks over the past 10 days.

The deceased is Suratun Nesa, wife of late Rongu Sheikh of Batkuchi Namapara area under the upazila.

According to locals, a herd of 15 elephants descended from the hills in search of food amid rain, dragged the sleeping woman out of the house and crushed her to the courtyard and killed her.

Deowan Ali, range officer of Madhutila forest division, said that the elephants were rampaging through Batkuchi and Palashikura for several days.

The same herd damaged eco-park facilities, local homes and even a film shooting set, he said.
