A female teacher was killed and three others injured in an attack over a land dispute in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar Monday morning.

The deceased, Rojina Begum, 30, was the daughter of the late Nijam Uddin of Bhasanigaon village under Madhabpur union in Kamalganj upazila and a teacher at a local kindergarten, police said.

Locals said that a long-standing dispute existed between Rojina’s family and their neighbour Rahim Miah’s family over ownership of a piece of agricultural land. Despite a court order maintaining a status quo on the land, Rahim and his family allegedly began digging soil from the disputed property using an excavator at around 10:00am.

Rojina’s brothers Jalal Uddin, 48, and Nijam Uddin alias Harun Miah, 40, rushed to the site to stop the excavation. At that point, Rahim’s family members allegedly attacked them with locally made sharp weapons. Rojina and her elder sister Lubna also intervened and were similarly attacked.

Kamalganj police station officer-in-charge Syed Ishtiaque Ahmed said that Rojina died on the spot due to the injuries. Her body was sent to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, while the three injured—Jalal, Nijam, and Lubna—were also admitted to the hospital.

The OC added that three suspects—Rahim Miah, Manir Miah, and Moti Miah—had been detained for interrogation.

‘Further legal action will be taken upon receiving a written complaint from the victim’s family,’ he added.
