The International Crimes Tribunal’s prosecution on Sunday formally pressed charges against former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman, four of his subordinate officers, and three constables over the killing of six protesters during the July 2024 mass uprising in Chankharpool.

The accused include former DMP joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Ramna assistant deputy commissioner Shah Alam Md Akhterul Islam, former Ramna assistant commissioner Mohammad Imrul, Shahbagh police station inspector (operations) Ashrad Hossain, and suspended constables Sujan Hossain, Imaz Hossain Imon, and Nasirul Islam.

The prosecution alleged that Habibur Rahman and his senior officers abetted, ordered, and facilitated the killing of six demonstrators by their subordinates, who opened fire and killed six protesters on the spot during the protest on August 5, 2024.

The three-member Tribunal-1, chaired by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, took cognizance into the charges and fixed June 3 for the appearance of the accused in court to begin further proceedings.

The charges were formally submitted by chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam.

In April the tribunal’s investigation agency completed its inquiry into the alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July-August uprising in Chankharpool area of Dhaka.

According to prosecution sources, four of the accused are currently in custody, while four others — including Habibur Rahman — are absconding.

The investigation report stated that Armed Police Battalion member Md Sujan Hossain was directly involved in opening fire on protesters and bystanders near Borhanuddin College, resulting in the deaths of seven people.

Video footage and eyewitness testimony reportedly show Sujan firing from multiple positions on the orders from their superior officers.

Prosecutors claim that the constables acted under explicit orders from their superior officers.
