Employees of Palli Bidyut Samity on Wednesday held a demonstration at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital to press home their seven-point demand, including the removal of the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board chair.

Protesters alleged that the REB chairman major general SM Zia-Ul-Azim was responsible for destabilised the working environment by repressing the employees of PBS.

They staged the demonstration as part of their pre-announced ‘March to Dhaka’ programme.

The other demands included merging REB and PBS through implementation of one and the same service rules, regularisation of jobs of meter readers and others, withdrawing false and harassing cases and reinstatement of dismissed employees, cancelling transfer orders of line crews, increasing manpower, and formation of an interim board to run PBS until complete reforms are carried out.

Earlier on Tuesday, REB issued a press release on its position regarding the on-going protest of sacked employees of PBS.

It said that the REB was not the authority to merge REB and PBS and any act of violation of office discipline keeping the customers hostage would not be tolerated.

Different initiatives had been taken to increase the job facilities of PBS employees but some employees were conducting unreasonable activities for the purpose of personal gain and announce the ‘March to Dhaka’ programme, said the release.
