A 70-year-old man was killed allegedly by his cousin over a long-standing land dispute at Sudampara village under Mahmudnagar union in Nagarpur upazila of Tangail early Monday.

The deceased, Abdul Jabbar, was a resident of the same village. The accused, Md Badsha Mia, is the joint convener of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Mahamudnagar union unit.

Nagarpur police station officer-in-charge Md Rafiqul Islam confirmed the death and said that Jabbar’s body was sent to Tangail Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

‘A case is being filed, and police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident,’ he added.

Locals said that Jabbar and Badsha Mia had been in a prolonged conflict over a piece of land. Following the change in government on August 5, Badsha Mia allegedly attempted to seize the land using political influence.

At about 6:00am Monday, Badsha Mia reportedly arrived at Jabbar’s home with several associates and attacked him, leaving Jabbar and four others injured.

Family members and locals rushed the injured to Nagarpur upazila health complex, where Jabbar was declared dead by the on-duty doctor.
