Readymade garment workers on Thursday blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for about three hours in Gazipur demanding their due salaries for the month of April and festival allowances.
Traffic on both sides of the highway was halted due to the blockade causing suffering to the people.
Workers of BHIS Apparels Ltd said that the factory authorities did not pay their salaries for the month of April that created uncertainty about the payment of festival allowances before Eid-ul-Azha.
Despite repeated meetings with the factory authorities in this regard, 1,500 workers of the factory did not get specific assurance, claimed the workers.
The protesting workers came to the factory on Saturday morning like every day and worked for a while. Later, they came out of the factory and blocked the highway.
Gazipur industrial police superintendent AKM Zahirul Islam said that the workers blocked the highway in the morning demanding salaries and festival allowances.
They later lifted the blockade at around 12:00pm after discussions with the police and the local administration, said Zahirul.
The workers said that if their due salaries and festival allowances were not paid soon, they would announce a tougher programme.
