Supporters of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Ishraque Hossain locked the gates of the Dhaka South City Corporation headquarters for the second working day on Saturday, demanding that he be sworn in as the city mayor.

Service seekers under the DSCC jurisdiction suffered immensely as all officials and staff members could not enter the office.

On Saturday, supporters and followers of Ishraque locked all the Nagar Bhaban gates, including its main gate at about 9:00am under the banner of Dhaka residents.

They also announced that they will continue their demonstration for today.

During the demonastration, they also announced local government, rural development and co-operatives adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain as persona non-gatra in the Nagar Bhaban for the delay in swearing in of Ishraque as the Dhaka south city mayor.

DSCC public relations officer Rasel Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Saturday that no activities were held at the Nagar Bhaban as the gates were locked.

‘We have no other option to enter the office,’ he said, adding that they could not enter office on Thursday as well.

Addressing a press conference at the National Press Club in the evening, Ishraque said that it is clearly seen that a vested group in the government is trying to give special privileges to particular people.

He said that he was denied taking oath as he was a BNP nominated candidate.

‘The government wants to secure their followers as administrators for taking advantage in the forthcoming elections,’ he said.

He further said that the movement was not called by him and it was a movement of Dhaka residents and he came to know that DSCC officials and employees would join the protest.

In the afternoon, when the followers of Ishraque tried to march towards the secretariat, police obstructed them, forcing them to return to Nagar Bhaban, United News of Bangladesh reported.

The protesters had announced a long march programme from the Nagar Bhaban to the secretariat for Saturday, demanding that the mayor’s responsibilities be given to Ishraque.

Earlier, on March 27, Dhaka’s First Joint District And Election Tribunal judge, Md Nurul Islam, declared Ishraq Hossain as the rightful mayor, annulling the results of the 2020 Dhaka South City Corporation elections that had declared Fazle Noor Taposh as the winner.

Later on April 27, the EC issued a gazette notification declaring him as the mayor.
