Students of Rajshahi University’s finance department on Thursday staged demonstrations demanding permanent expulsion of a teacher of the department, associate Professor Mohammad Hedayet Ullah, over allegations of sexual harassment and moral turpitude.
Over two hundred students brought out a protest procession on the campus and later held a rally in front of the university’s Rabindranath Tagore Academic Building where students marched with placards and chanted slogans such as ‘shame on Hedayet Ullah, we want your expulsion’ and ‘one demand, one voice — when will you leave?’
Protesting students alleged that Hedayet Ullah was caught in a compromising situation with a female student inside his chamber in the Room 307 of the Tagore building on Sunday evening.
The incident, however, came to light after a video of the incident went viral on social media on Wednesday evening, triggering outrage among students.
The students said that the accused had tarnished the reputation of the department and should not be allowed to continue teaching.
‘We refuse to accept someone like him as our teacher. He has disgraced our department and we will not attend his classes anymore. We demand his permanent removal from the department,’ said a protesting student.
The students also demanded disciplinary action against the female student involved in the incident, accusing her of engaging in unethical behaviour.
Professor Shibley Sadique, chairperson of the department, said that they were aware of the situation. ‘We are aware of the incident and the students’ concerns. We will sit for a detailed discussion and review the demands thoroughly. A collective decision will be made, but we need some time.’
