
A group of students and people on Monday urged the people of the country to sing the national anthem of Bangladesh collectively as a protest against dishonouring it during recent demonstrations demanding a ban on and the trial of the Awami League.
In a Facebook event, the organisers made the call urging the people to attend an event at the Central Shaheed Minar to sing the national anthem collectively at 4:31pm on Wednesday.
One of the organisers of the event, Maeen Ahmed, vice-president of the Bangladesh Students鈥 Union, in a Facebook post urged all to sing the national anthem collectively on the campuses and in districts across the country.
The description of the event read that the event was organised to protest against disrespecting the national anthem by raising objections to the national anthem while it was being performed during recent demonstrations at Shahbagh.
Meanwhile, Socialist Students鈥 Front president Mukta Barai and its general secretary Raihan Uddin in a joint statement condemned the incident of disrespecting the national anthem and demanded punishment for those involved in objecting to the performance of the national anthem.
鈥榃hen the national anthem was being sung at a rally demanding a ban on the Awami League, an anti-independence group objected to the performance and chanted slogans such as 鈥淏huwa Bhuwa [fake, fake]鈥. Such incident is shameful for the entire nation,鈥 the statement issued on Monday said.
Earlier, students, individuals injured during the July uprising, and activists from a wide range of political and religious parties and organisations, including the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the Islami Andolan Bangladesh, the Hefazat-e Islam Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, the Islami Chhatra Andolan Bangladesh, the Inquilab Mancha, the Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad, and the Amar Bangladesh Party joined demonstrations following the call from NCP leaders Nahid Islam and Hasnat Abdullah demanding a ban on and trial of the Awami League.
A video clipping of one of the demonstrations showing groups of people objecting to the performance of the national anthem drew huge criticism on social media.
On Monday evening, over one hundred students of Dhaka University staged a demonstration by singing the national anthem at the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture on the campus, 抖阴精品 DU Correspondent reported.
Student leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal鈥檚 DU unit, Bangladesh Democratic Student Council, Revolutionary Students鈥 Unity, Bangladesh Students鈥 Union and others joined the programme.
Addressing the programme, BDSC convener Abu Baker Majumder said, 鈥楶eople may hold different opinions, but no one has the right to dishonour the national anthem.鈥
