A case was filed against 165 people on Sunday over the clash between two groups of pro-Bangladesh Nationalist Party professional leaders at the annual general meeting at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.

The clash left over three dozen people, including six policemen injured when followers of IEB president Riazul Islam, also a former BNP science and technology affairs secretary and former IEB honourary general secretary Muhammad Quayyum also former Jatiytabadi Chhtra Dal BUET Titumir Hall unit joint convener, clashed over the annual general meeting, said police officials.

IEB honouary general secretary Md Sabbir Mustafa Khan filed the case against 15 named and 100-150 unnamed people over the allegations of attacking engineers in an attempt to foil the AGM, Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Khalid Mansur said.

The named accused in the case include engineer Md Ilias Hossain, engineer Soheb Bashori Hablu and IEB former honourary general secretary Miah Muhammad Quayyum.

IEB president Riazul Islam said that Quayyum led the attack with goons using the name of the BNP.

‘We are holding the AGM to hand over power through an election. But Quayyum attacked us suddenly to foil the AGM,’ Riazul alleged.

He said that 17 engineers were injured in the attack.

Muhammad Quayyum alleged that 17 engineers on their side were injured in the attack and one of them was undergoing treatment at Square Hospital.

‘Riazul and Sabbir grabbed the IEB committee illegally following the August 5, 2024 political changeover,’ Quayyum said, adding that the AGM was called to legalise the committee formed without elections and what IEB did during the final years of the fascist Awami League.

Quayyum alleged that Riazul and Sabbir brought Jamaat activists to bar them from entering the IEB AGM.

Quayyum said that police had taken the side of Riazul and framed them in a false case as police high officials were involved in the conspiracy.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna Division deputy commissioner Masud Alam, however, claimed that none of the high officials forced them to take anyone’s side.

‘We went to the spot to bring the situation under control,’ Masud added.
