
At least 583 people were killed and 1,202 more injured in 567 road crashes in the country in April, said a Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh report published on Tuesday.
The highest number of deaths occurred in accidents involving motorcycles, the report also said, mentioning that 37.91 per cent or 229 people died and 18.64 per cent or 224 more were injured in 37.91 per cent or 215 motorcycle related accidents.
In Chattogram division, the highest number of road accidents, 138, caused 136 deaths and injuries to 377 people while the lowest number of accidents, 28, occurred in the Sylhet division, killing 31 people and injring 51 more.
Trains were involved in the next highest number of deaths—35 people—with five more injured in 35 railway accidents.
Ten people were killed and one more remained missing in eight waterways accidents.
The report was prepared based on reports published in different national dailies, seven online news portals, different electronic media and own sources, said a press release issued by the association.
Of the fatal victims, 132 were transport workers including drivers, 107 were pedestrians, 45 were students and 13 were teachers.
Fifty-five fatal victims were children in March.
Of the crashes, the highest 50.97 per cent were caused when vehicles crushed onto other things followed by 23.8 per cent by head-on collisions, 18.51 per cent by the vehciles falling into roadside ditches as the drivers lost control of the vehicles, 5.99 per cent by other reasons and 0.35 per cent each by collision between trains and other vehciles and tangling scarves on vehicle wheels.
According to the report, the highest, 33.68 per cent road accidents took place on feeder roads followed by 31.74 per cent on national highways and 29.1 per cent on regional highways.
Out of total accidents, 4.05 per cent occurred in Dhaka metropolitan city and 1.05 per cent in Chattogram metropolitan city.
The association recommended stopping importing smaller vehicles, including motorcycles and easybikes, immediately and enforcing laws strictly to improve the situations.
