Two individuals were arrested for their attempt to attack former lawmaker Sheikh Sujat Miah, also executive member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, at Nabiganj in Habiganj on Thursday.

The arrested were Abdur Rashid, 55, of Purba-Timirpur village under Nabiganj, and Jamil Miah, 32, of Timirpur village the same upazila, said the police.

Witnesses said that several people armed with locally made sharp weapons attempted to attack Sujat Miah at Timirpur area of the upazila when he was getting in his car.

The attackers, however, were resisted by local leaders and activists of the BNP and were forced to flee the scene in the face of resistance at that moment, they said.

BNP leader Sujat was returning home at that time after participating in a procession and a discussion organised by the Sramik Dal of the upazila marking May Day, the police said.

Nabiganj police station officer-in-charge Md Kamal Hossain said that they went to the spot immediately and detained Abdur Rashid and Jamil for their suspected involvement in the attack.

‘A machete and a knife were also seized from their possession at that time,’ mentioned Kamal Hossain, adding that in this connection, a BNP activist Shipan Miah filed a case with the police on Thursday.

‘The detained were also produced before the Habiganj judicial magistrate court and they were sent to jail following the court order,’ said the OC.
