A former Rajshahi City Corporation councillor died while attempting to flee upon seeing police on April 30 night.
The deceased was Kamal Hossain, 55, a resident of Daspukur area in the city.
According to the police, local people and family members, Kamal once was engaged in Bangladesh Nationalist Party politics, but later joined the Awami League and became a councillor of the RCC.
After the fall of the autocratic AL regime amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024, Kamal was charged in at least four cases, and he went into hiding, fearing arrest. But he remained in the area, local people said.
Sohan Shakil, son of the deceased, said that after his father noticed police around their house, he entered one of their neighbour’s house and attempted to climb to the roof using the stairs.
‘But he became ill on the staircase and died there,’ he said, adding that he believed his father might have suffered a heart attack triggered by fear, or possibly due to underlying cardiac issues exacerbated by the stress of the situation.
However, Ashraful Alam, officer-in-charge of the Rajpara police station, said that police went to the Daspukur area on April 30 night, but not to arrest Kamal.
