The Mongla Port Authority clarified that recent reports circulating on social media regarding attacks on labour leaders were not reflective of the port’s operations, but rather stem from internal conflicts among workers managed by stevedores.

In a statement on Tuesday, the authority emphasised that the workers in question were not employed directly by the port but were managed by licensed stevedores who oversaw all recruitment, management, and payment processes related to the unloading and loading of commercial ships.

Mongla Port, the second-largest seaport in Bangladesh, handles nearly a thousand foreign commercial ships annually, contributing significantly to the nation’s import-export operations and the broader economy. The port has created employment for thousands of workers and supports a vast ecosystem, including EPZs and related industries.

The authority warned that such internal labour disputes and negative publicity could harm the port’s reputation internationally. A decline in ship arrivals could severely impact the livelihoods of thousands of workers and slow the country’s economic growth.

Reiterating the importance of maintaining the port’s stability, the authority urged all stakeholders to avoid conflict and work collectively for the continued development of the Mongla Port in the interest of the nation.
