A stone-laden vessel sank in the rough waters of the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Sandwip in Chattogram on Thursday morning.
A service boat from Kumira in Sitakunda spotted the crew and managed to rescue them after nearly an hour of effort.
‘All seven individuals aboard were rescued unharmed by locals,’ said Wali Uddin Akbar, inspector of Kumira river police outpost.
The incident took place at around 9:40am near Buoy 2 adjacent to Guptachhara in Kumira, said Wali Uddin.
He also said that the Ball Gate had departed from the Karnaphuli River terminal around 8:00am, en route to Bhola. ‘As it approached the Guptachhara area, the vessel was caught in high waves due to rough sea conditions and eventually capsized.’
The vessel went under completely due to water entering the hull, Akbar said.
