
At least 10 people were killed and 19 injured in road accidents in Habiganj, Sirajganj, Chuadanga and Munshiganj on Friday.
In Habiganj, four people, including two women killed and six were injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup van on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway at Madhabpur on early Friday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent from Sylhet reported.
All victims were in the pickup van carrying 17 people.
The deceased are Ayesha Beg, 38, of Kadma village in Nabiganj, Mustakima Akter, 35, Hafizur Rahman, 26 of Chamakpur village at Baniachaung and Rahim Mia, 22, the van’s assistant from Sirajganj.
The injured are Parash Banu, 40, Asma Begum, 22, Shahin Miah, 21, his wife Reshma Akter, 18, and two children—Takrim Miah, 3, and Salman Miah, 2—along with the pickup driver Alam Miah, 45.
The injured were taken to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital.
Shaistaganj Highway Police officer-in-charge ATM Mahmudul Haque, said that both vehicles were seized but the truck driver and his assistant managed to flee the scene.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Sirajganj reported that two people were killed in a head-on collision between a cement-laden truck and a microbus on the Dhaka–Pabna Highway near Ullapara Railway Station early Friday.
The victims are Mansurul Alam, 43, the microbus driver from Harinathpur at Pabna Sadar and Manik Chandra Shil, 42.
Another passenger, Suman Das, was seriously injured and taken to Ullapara Upazila Health Complex.
Abdur Rauf, officer-in-charge of Hatikumrul highway police station, said that the truck was travelling from Baghabari to Bogura when it lost control and overturned after the crash.
‘The truck driver and his assistant managed to flee and the bodies were later handed over to their families,’ Abdur Rauf said.
In Chuadanga, two people were killed died when a Dhaka-bound bus hit a motorised van early Friday in Noy Mile area on the Chuadanga-Jhenaidah Highway, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported.
The deceased are rice trader Sarwar Khondaker, 50, and van driver Razzak, 65, both from Kutubpur village under the Chuadanga Sadar.
Witnesses said that the bus rammed their motorised ‘pakhi van’ from behind at around 5:30am, killing them on the spot.
BSS also reported that two people were killed and three injured in a road accident that took place in Nondibari area of Bhaluka.
The deceased are Lal Mia, 32, son of Ajgar Ali of Purba Bhaluka area, and Rokeya Akther, 48, wife of Surjat Ali.
Police said a Bhaluka-bound microbus collided with a CNG-powered three-wheeler coming from the opposite direction around 11am, leaving five people injured.
The injured were taken to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex, where Lal Mia succumbed to his injuries.
Later, the others injured were taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where Rokeya Akther died.
Meanwhile, in Munshiganj, eight passengers were injured in a collision involving multiple vehicles on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway at Srinagar between Thursday night and Friday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Munshiganj correspondent reported.
According to witnesses, the Barishal Express bus was speeding when it was hit by a microbus, a covered van and then collided with a container vehicle at about 9:30pm, blowing off its roof.
Mohammad Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Padma Bridge North Police Station, said that most passengers received first aid locally, but one seriously injured passenger, Shahin, was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
