Water resources adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced on Saturday that the government extended the feasibility study timeline for the Teesta River project by two more years under two specific conditions.

Speaking at an event organised by the Bangladesh Water Development Board to mark World Water Day, she stated that the government would construct a 20-kilometre embankment along the most erosion-prone banks of the river.

The extension has been granted to allow Power China to share its plans with riverine communities, the adviser said, adding that public hearings have also been conducted in five districts, and discussions with experts will follow.

Rizwana emphasised that the government would not compromise on the quality of work carried out under the BWDB.

‘If any violations are found, please inform the ministry’s monitoring team,’ she urged the public.

Additionally, she announced that the government finalised a policy on industrial water usage, which will be implemented soon.

She expressed the hope that the official list of rivers would be made public on April 14.

She also expected that action plans for the restoration of at least 14 rivers and canals—including the four rivers surrounding Dhaka and seven rivers from different divisions—would be finalised soon.

Senior officials and civil society representatives also spoke at the event.
