A group of Dhaka University students on early Friday night staged a protest march on the Dhaka University campus demanding a ban on the Awami League.

The march began at around 2:00am from the university’s hall para area and concluded with a brief rally in front of the anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture.

During the march, protesters chanted slogans including ‘The Awami League must be banned immediately,’ ‘Beware, accomplices of fascism,’ and ‘Ban, ban, the murderous League.’

From the brief rally, Dhaka University student Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad said, ‘You are trying to give them space for the sake of power. As long as there is a drop of blood in our bodies, we will not let the Awami League continue politics.’

Another student, AB Zubair, stated, The people of this country would not accept it if those responsible for shedding blood and committing genocide were not banned.

From the brief rally, Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad announced another protest rally at 3:00pm on Friday to press home the ban on the Awami League, urging school and college students to take to the streets.

At the protest programme, the students also lit fires and sat in circles, chanting slogans demanding the ban of the Awami League.

Earlier on Thursday, during a discussion at the state guesthouse Jamuna with a delegation led by International Crisis Group (ICG) president and CEO, Comfort Ero, chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus stated that the interim government had no plans to ban Awami League.

Following media reports on this statement, Dhaka University students took to the streets late at night in protest.
