Two complaints have been filed against United Hospital, alleging medical negligence and inadequate post-operative care that led to the death of an elderly patient.

Mohammad Rakib Uddin, son of deceased Velayet Hussain, 80, submitted the complaints to the Directorate General of Health Services and the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council earlier this month, seeking a thorough investigation into the death and justice for his father.

In his written complaints, Rakib stated that his father required an aortic valve replacement and was given two options– open-heart surgery or the less invasive but costlier Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

The procedure was performed at United Hospital on December 9, 2024.

Serious complications, however, arose during the operation, leading to uncontrolled internal bleeding and Belayet Hossain died on January 9, 2025.

The family later discovered that the TAVI procedure had inadvertently punctured the heart, causing severe haemorrhage.

Rakib alleged that the hospital’s post-operative care was grossly inadequate. He claimed that despite his father’s critical condition, he was transferred to a general room in a wheelchair instead of being given the necessary medical attention.

He also accused the hospital of assigning junior nurses to his father’s care without the continuous supervision of senior medical professionals.

Despite the severity of his father’s condition, no medical board was convened to review the case, Rakib said, claiming that a lack of coordination among doctors further worsened the situation.

United Hospital’s general manager for communication and business development, Md Fazlarabbi Khan, however, denied any negligence on the hospital’s part.

‘The complainant is making these allegations out of ignorance,’ he said, adding that they maintain high standards of care.

He also said that only a few healthcare institutions in Bangladesh performed the TAVI procedure.

Khan further stated that Rakib did not file any complaints directly with the hospital.

He added that United Hospital had not yet been contacted by the DGHS or BMDC for an inquiry.
