The Border Guard Bangladesh on Saturday afternoon brought 26 Bangladeshi fishermen back from Myanmar’s Arakan Army’s custody.
The Arakan Army handed over the 26 Bangladeshi fishermen at about 3:15pm on the day following repeated attempts by the BGB for a long time, said a BGB press release issued in the evening.
A total of 26 fishermen went to the Bay of Bengal for catching fishes at different times with separate groups, the BGB said, adding that the fishermen crossed the Bangladesh border by mistake and entered Myanmar territory.
It said that the Arakan Army detained them on allegation of illegal intrusion.
BGB 2 Battalion in Teknaf commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Ashikur Rahman said that they had contacted the Arakan Army and 26 fishermen were brought back from the zero line in the sea.
‘We are now screening the fishermen at the Teknaf jetty, and we will hand over them to their families after the screening,’ he added.
He told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the fishermen were detained by the Arakan Army in the past one month on different dates.
‘We are trying to bring back other Bangladeshi fishermen,’ he added.
