
At least 119 people were killed in 144 mob beating incidents across the country in the past seven months.
The number of deaths in mob beating incidents in the seven months between August 2024 and February this year indicates a sharp rise in mob beating incidents in recent times, according to a report released by the Human Rights Support Society.
It said that at least 792 people were killed and 765 others were injured in mob beating incidents in the past 10 years till 2024.
The human rights organisation recorded the highest number of 201 mob beating incidents in 2024. At least 179 people were killed and 88 others were injured in the incidents.
According to the data, at least 19 people were killed and 20 others were injured in 30 mob beating incidents in the first two months of 2025.
HRSS executive director Ijajul Islam said that they had collected the data from newspaper reports and their sources.
鈥楾he actual number of such extra judicial killings will be higher than those were reported,鈥 he said.
According to the HRSS, at least 128 people were killed and 95 others were injured in 89 mob attacks in 2015, 104 people were killed and 41 were injured in 111 incidents in 2016, 65 were killed and 85 were injured in 85 incidents in聽 2017, 44 killed and 64 injured in 74 incidents in 2018, 73 killed and 103 injured in 112 incidents in 2019, 40 killed and 30 injured in 61 incidents in 2020, 48 killed and 85 injured in 83 incidents in 2021, 38 killed and 83 injured in 79 incidents in 2022 and 73 people were killed and 91 others were injured in 114 incidents in 2023.
However, rights body Ain o Salish Kendra in its monthly updates revealed that at least 112 people were beaten to death in the past six months from August 2024 to January this year. The ASK data shows that at least 16 people were beaten to death in the first month of this year.
