A fire broke out on a hillock near Osmani International Airport in Sylhet on Sunday afternoon, causing panic among air passengers and their companions.

The blaze started at about 1:30 pm at the top of the hillock, adjacent to the police outpost near the airport entrance, airport officials said.

Osmani International Airport director Hafiz Ahmed confirmed the incident, stating that the fire was quickly extinguished.

‘It appeared to be a bushfire, which is common on hillocks during winter and early spring when dry leaves can ignite from sparks,’ he said.

Belal Ahmed, senior station officer of Sylhet Fire Service and Civil Defence, said that two units from Taltala fire service and one from airport fire service brought the fire under control in about an hour.

No damage was reported, and the cause of the fire remained unconfirmed, he added.
